What is Diagnosing Dyslexia?

Diagnosing Dyslexia is an online course designed to teach you all the skills you need in order to be able to provide an educational diagnosis to identify dyslexia in students who are in the second half of 1st grade through 8th grade.

Participants will work through modules at their own pace, practice with actual student work, and complete assessments to earn certification.

The program is specifically designed for teachers, tutors, and practitioners who have worked with students with dyslexia for at least two years, and there will be a vetting process to ensure participants are a good fit for the program.

This course is for teachers and tutors who already have experience working with students with dyslexia for at least two years. After your enrollment, you will be sent a questionnaire to complete to ensure you are a good fit for the program. Should it be determined that this program isn't right for you at this time, you will be issued a full refund.
There is one required assessment tool you will need to purchase in order to complete the program successfully. This one-time purchase (from a separate company) will allow you to own the CTOPP2 kit for life, and once trained, you will be qualified to give your students this norm-referenced, standardized test that effectively assesses rapid naming skills along with five different phonemic awareness skills. While there are no dates that you need to have things finished by, we will require that you complete the course in 6 months to get the actual "certificate of completion."

I recently assessed a 40 year old woman who is courageously attempting to return to college for the 4th time. Previously she did not even suspect dyslexia and never got one accommodation in college. Let me tell you my favorite assessment story: This was the first child I ever assessed formally. He was in 8th grade. Back in 3rd grade, his teacher told him he was being lazy and not putting forth the effort to succeed in school. She also would call him out in front of his peers and ask, “Are you trying to be dumb? You know the answer to this, we discussed this just yesterday.” This child started frequently wetting his pants and not wanting to go to school. In 4th grade, the parents were starting to get really concerned, but the teacher said the boy was getting A’s and B’s and was fine. They just needed to calm down. He was assessed and diagnosed with dyslexia in 8th grade, and later went on to get his associates’ degree at the same time as his high school diploma, and during a global pandemic.
